Tips for Moving with Children

Moving is a challenge all on its own, and it gets far more complicated when you have children. To make sure the transition goes smoothly for them (and for you!), try the following tips.
Teach Kids What to Expect
Small children may not have a clear idea of what it actually means to move. It’s best to explain to them exactly what will happen before you start packing. That way, it won’t come as a shock to them when they figure out they aren’t going to see your old home anymore.
Prepare Well in Advance
Having children in the home means everything takes longer—including moving. Begin packing months in advance to give yourself plenty of time to get everything together. Also, if you can control the circumstances of your move, try to plan on a time that will be least disruptive to your children’s lives.
Pack “Must-Have” Bags
Consider having each child pack a few of their favorite toys into a backpack prior to the move. This will give them a sense of security of having something familiar readily at hand while traveling to your new home.
Label Boxes Clearly
As you pack up toys, make sure they are well organized (your kids can help sort them) and that each box is very clearly labeled. The more detailed the better—inevitably, someone will want that one toy that was packed away somewhere, so it’s best to make it easy to find.
Pack One Box of Toys Last
As you pack up your child’s items, save some for right before moving day. This will give them something to do during the course of your moving preparations.
Accidents Will Happen
If you have kids who have only recently been toilet trained, pack an extra change of clothes or even consider using disposable underwear for the trip. That way, you have a backup plan if you can’t reach a bathroom in time.
Goodbye Party
Your kids will have built some close relationships with friends and family in the area, so it’s best to give them a chance to say goodbye before moving. It can also make moving fun if you throw a party!
